XYLAZINE Injectable solution
COMPOSITION (per ml):
Xylazine base (as Hydrochloride)……………………………….20 mg
TARGET SPECIES
Horses, calves, sheep, goats, dogs and cats.
INDICATIONS
In all cases that tranquillizing action is required (as restraint, transportation, sedation during small operations, e.t.c). It is also used to provoke muscle-relaxant and analgesia and for preanesthesia.
DOSAGE AND METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION
The administration is done intramuscularly (horses, calves, sheep and goats, dogs and cats), intravenously (horses, dogs) or subcutaneously (cats)
Calves: 1) 0.05 mg/kg (0.25 ml/100kg of body weight.) for simply muscle-relaxant and light analgesic. It’s useful for tranquillizing action at minor operations. 2) 0.10 mg/kg (0.50 ml/100kg of body weight.) for minor operations and injury care (the animal may standing or couching) 3) 0.20 mg/kg (1 ml/100kg of body weight.) for more difficult and bigger duration operations (the animal couching) 4) 0.30 mg/kg (1,5 ml/100kg of body weight.), is used rarely and during very heavy and extended duration operations
Horses: 1) Intravenously: 0.8 mg/kg (4ml/100kg of body weight) 2) Intramuscularly: 2mg/kg (105ml/100kg of body weight)
Sheep and goats: Intramuscularly: 0.3mg/kg (0.15/10kg of body weight)
Dogs:
Intramuscularly or intravenously: 1-3 mg per kg (0,5-1,5ml/10 kg of body weight)
Preanesthesia:0, 5-1,1 mg per kg (0,3-0,5mlper 10 kg of body weight)
When it is combined with ketamine 2 mg per kg (1ml per 10 kg of body weight) with 6-10 mg per kg of ketamine
Cats:
Intramuscularly or subcutaneously: 1-3 mg per kg (0,05-0,15 ml per kg of body weight)
For the preanesthesia: 1 mg per kg (0,05 ml per kg)
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Do not administer during the last stage of pregnancy, to animals with pulmonary or cardiovascular diseases, to dogs or cats with hernia, infarction of oesophagus or gastric version (because it is possible to cause vomit, that is usual to cats)
UNDESIRABLE EFFECTS
In pyometra cases is possible to present hypersensitivity to xylazine. Usually it causes oligocardia or / and arrhythmia, which are prevented and handled by atropine administration. It causes also hyperglycemia and polyuria.
INTERACTION WITH OTHER MEDICAMENTS
It should not be administered in combination with neuroleptic or tranquillizers.
More repression is noticed when xylazine is administered in combination with barbiturates. The administration of barbiturates for anesthesia installation should be done in a reduced dosage and slowly intravenous injection.

Do not administer at the last stages of pregnancy.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS FOR EVER TARGET SPECIE
Do not administer at breeds of dogs that are particular susceptible to gastric dilatation (Great Dane, Irish Setter, Basset Hound). Also, it is recommended the simultaneous administration of atropine at half, after the administration of xylazine. At dogs, the tension of vomit is reduced when the injection is done intravenously.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS FOR USE
The animals must be restrained carefully and be remained in quiet places as long as lasts the action of xylazine. To the pets is good enough the combination with atropine.
